What Happens During a 3D Scan in Perth?

The ultrasound room at Peek-a-Boo is warm and comfortable. We've kept it very home-like to make sure that families feel welcome. Bring tissues in case emotions run high. Grandparents are often deeply moved at their first glimpse of their grandchild.

As the Sonographer only needs to get to your stomach, you won't need to undress. She applies a cool gel to your skin and uses a wand, also known as a transducer, to transmit the images. The procedure is completely painless.

You might not see anything straight away, especially if you're in your first trimester. The Sonographer will move the wand around until she gets the baby into the correct position to be seen on the screen.

What Do You Get To See?

You'll see your baby on a large screen that is mirrored from the ultrasound machine. How your baby is lying will affect the quality of the image and how much of your little one you get to see. If your baby is being shy, the Sonographer might ask you to stretch or roll onto your side. Sometimes this is enough to get the baby moving.

1st Trimester 3D Ultrasound

You may have had a 2D scan, but a 3D or 4D scan shows you so much more. Seeing your baby at a 12 weeks ultrasound can be quite an emotional experience. As your baby is still small, you won't be feeling any movement yet.

Facial features aren't defined, but you'll be able to see your baby's arms, legs, and body moving. 1st trimester babies can be very active and move around a lot more than you'd expect.

Baby's heartbeat will be visible and you'll be able to hear it as well. Your baby's heart beats much faster than yours does.

2nd & 3rd Trimester 3D Ultrasound

At this stage, you'll be able to see some facial characteristics that you may not have expected. As your baby grows, there is less room for them to move around and they'll move differently. For many Dad's this is when they begin to connect with the baby too.

Mothers can see the baby moving while feeling the movement at the same time.

4D Ultrasound

4D Ultrasound technology creates video-like 3D imagery of your baby in real time. You get to watch your baby stretching, drinking, and yawning. You'll see them sucking on their fingers and sometimes even their toes.
